The Federative Republic of Brazil is the third greater in area and as the more populous country of Americas and the fifth greater in area and population of the world. Its total area is of 8.514.876, 599 km ² and bes situated in the part center-oriental of the South America. Its borders to the north are with Venezuela, the Guyana, the Suriname and with the French overseas department of the French Guyana; the east and Southeast make border with the Atlantic Ocean. To the south, it limits with Uruguay; the southwest, with Argentina and Paraguay; the west, with Bolivia and Peru, and the northwest, with Colombia. The only South American countries that do not make border with Brazil are Chile and the Equator. Brazil is divided in 26 states, and a Federal District, and is subdivided in 5.564 cities, that are independent and possess universal suffrage. The cities can be subdivided in districts, and if subdivide in quarters. Beyond the continental territory, Brazil also possesss some small groups of islands in the Atlantic Ocean: Penedos of Is Peter and São Paulo, Fernando De Noronha (special administrative region of the state of Pernambuco) and Trindade and Martim Vaz in the Espirito Santo. It also has a complex of small islands and chorales called Atol the Rocas. Brazil got its independence in 7 of September of 1822 and if it transformed into a Monarchy led for D. Peter I, who was succeeded by D. Peter II. In 1889 the Republic, kept until today is proclaimed. Although to be the fifth more populous country of the world, Brazil presents one of the lowest population densities, therefore most of the population if concentrates throughout the coast, presenting enormous demographic emptinesses in its interior. The climate of the country is, predominantly, tropical, with exception of the South of the country, that presents subtropical climate, with well defined stations.
